Green light for fat burning beverage

Green tea has long been hailed for it’s health giving benefits. I always use it as part of my Nutritio detox programme to both increase antioxidants and increase metabolism. A recent study shows that green tea as a drink or capsules may decrease body weight and body fat:

A cup (or four) of an inexpensive, readily available tea may help strip excess pounds, suggests a new report. The study found that green tea as capsules or tea significantly reduced body fat over 8 weeks. Put the kettle on.

In a randomised controlled trial, 35 subjects with metabolic syndrome received either green tea (4 cups per day), green tea extract (2 capsules and 4 cups water per day) or a control (4 cups water per day) over 8 weeks. The green tea capsules and beverage provided a similar amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the active compound in green tea.

After 8 weeks both the tea and capsule groups showed a significant decrease in body weight (-2.5kg) and body mass index (-1.9) versus controls. In addition the group drinking the tea had a decreasing trend in LDL-cholesterol and LDL/HDL-cholesterol and a significant reduction in markers of oxidative stress.

A recent meta-analysis confirmed a positive effect of green tea on weight loss and weight loss maintenance (Int J Obes. 2009 Sep;33(9):956-61.). This study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that the addition of green tea supplements or the consumption of green tea may be a useful addition to a weight management programme.
